His usual bike that year was black and yellow but you can’t use yellow in the Tour unless you’re leading it – hence the alternative pink colour scheme. That year the entire Mercatone Uno team rode the tour in pink outfits!

“It’s kitted out with full Campagnolo Record and Neutron wheels, Fizik saddle & tape, ITM bars, stem & post with Look pedals.

“I get a bit of stick from my friends considering I’m a guy – but then again I often wear a pink Giro d’Italia jersey when I’m riding it, or my Rapha ‘Mortirolo’ club jersey (who incidentally do some nice gear in pink, and with pink trim on other colours, the Stowaway jacket in pink is my next purchase).

“I’m from the UK and can often be seen turning various shades of pink as I cycle over the Pennines and Yorkshire Dales! “Yes the bike does live in the house if you were wondering – much to my wife’s dismay!”
